The University of Cyprus
The University of Cyprus was established in 1989 and admitted its first students in 1992. The University was founded in response to the growing intellectual needs of the Cyprus people, and is well placed to fulfil the numerous aspirations of the country. Since that time the University has been highly sought by both scholars and students, as evidenced by the number and calibre of its people. The main objectives of the University are twofold: the promotion of scholarship and education through teaching and research, and the enhancement of the cultural, social and economic development of Cyprus. The University sets high standards for all branches of scholarship, and research is promoted in all departments for this purpose.
The research programs conducted at the University cover a wide range of fields that relate to modern specializations and directions. These are funded both by funding agencies abroad and in Cyprus, and by the budget of the University. The University participates in a number of European and international university organizations and networks. Even before the recent accession of Cyprus as a full member to the European Union, the University has been cooperating, through interstate and inter-university agreements with European research centers for the promotion of science and technology. Moreover, in its attempt to contribute actively to the development of Cyprus, the University cooperates with various institutions in Cyprus on research programs that focus on the need of Cyprus industry, the economy and society at large.
The School of Engineering at the University of Cyprus was founded in 2001 and admitted its first students in 2003 to the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Architecture. In addition, there is a national Nanotechnology Research Center under establishment at UCY, capitalizing on key faculty research specialties and achievements in funding through Marie Curie, infrastructure programs etc, totalling over CYP 1.5 million in 2004. The University is in the process of installing state of the art facilities in nanomanufacturing for affordable technology transfer to industry. It is also initiating research in ultrasonic manufacturing of nanocomposites, computational nanofluidics, electrospun nanofiber membranes, and nanosensors with biomedical, agrifood and environmental applications.
The City of Limassol
Lemesos (Limassol), and the area immediately around it, is home to enough cultural treasures to keep you occupied for a few days by itself. In the heart of the city itself you’ll find the Cyprus Mediaeval Museum, housed in the imposing mediaeval fort where, in 1191, Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre and crowned her Queen of England. Some 19 kilometres west of Lemesos, is Kourion, one of the most impressive archaeological sites not just in Cyprus but in the entire Mediterranean. To the east (11km east of the town centre) is another important ancient city-Kingdom, Amathous. Do not miss a visit to the impressive mediaeval castle of Kollossi and its panoramic view from the top as well as a drive through the vineyards and the orchards in the area of Lemesos.
